Practical Advice to Help You Sleep More Comfortably

Practical Advice to Help You Sleep More Comfortably

Everyone sleeps differently, and the reasons for a poor night's sleep aren't always as obvious as they seem. You might wake with an aching back, find yourself constantly turning over during the night, or simply feel that your mattress isn't as comfortable as it used to be.

While the right bed or mattress can make a real difference, there is rarely a one-size-fits-all answer. Your sleeping position, body shape, personal preferences and even the age of your mattress all play a part.

This guide has been created to help you understand some of the most common sleep concerns and point you towards the advice, products and support that are most likely to help. Whether you're researching from home or planning to visit our showroom, our aim is simply to help you make a more informed decision.

What Would You Like Help With?

Explore some of the most common concerns we hear from customers and the different things worth considering before deciding whether a new mattress, bed or pillow is right for you.

Waking with aches or stiffness every morning can be frustrating, particularly if you feel fine by the end of the day. It's easy to assume you simply need a firmer mattress, but the right level of support depends on much more than firmness alone.

A mattress that has become worn or uneven can allow your body to sink in the wrong places, while a mattress that's too firm for your body shape may create pressure rather than relieve it. Your pillow, sleeping position and bed base can also influence how well your spine is supported overnight.

If your mattress is more than seven or eight years old, has visible dips, or no longer feels as comfortable as it once did, it may be worth exploring whether it's still the right fit. Consider an adjustable bed too as this provides a greater level of support and comfort without looking like a medical bed – there are some great options with specialist mattresses for fantastic spine support and come with unobtrusive divan bases and bedstead frames with optional storage. Equally, if your mattress is relatively new, a different pillow or a fully sprung divan base may provide the improvement you're looking for without the need for a new mattress.

Overheating is one of the most common reasons people struggle to stay asleep. While room temperature, duvets and bedding all play a part, your mattress can also affect how comfortably you sleep.

Different mattress materials regulate heat in different ways. Natural fibres such as wool and cotton are breathable and help manage moisture, while latex is often chosen for its open-cell structure that allows better airflow. Traditional mattresses are also available with a variety of comfort layers designed to improve ventilation without compromising support.

Finding a cooler mattress isn't about choosing the latest trend. It's about understanding which materials are most likely to suit the way you sleep.

Sharing a bed doesn't mean you have to put up with disturbed sleep. If you notice every movement your partner makes during the night, the construction of your mattress may be contributing to the problem.

Pocket sprung mattresses are designed so individual springs respond independently, helping to reduce the amount of movement transferred across the bed. Couples with different comfort preferences may also benefit from split-tension mattresses or zip and link options, allowing each person to choose a feel that suits them best.

The right choice depends on how you both sleep, your preferred comfort level and the size of your bed.

Sleeping on your side places more pressure on your shoulders and hips than sleeping on your back. A suitable mattress should provide enough cushioning to relieve those pressure points while keeping your spine comfortably aligned.

Without the correct support side-sleeping can result in aching shoulders and hips as well as misalignment of the spine, disturbing your night’s sleep or causing aching upon waking in the morning.

Many side sleepers assume they automatically need a soft mattress, but comfort is influenced by several factors, including your body weight, build and personal preference. Two people with the same sleeping position may prefer completely different mattresses.

Understanding how different mattress types and comfort levels work together will help you choose something that's comfortable throughout the night, not just for the first few minutes after lying down.

We offer a 100 night sleep trial for every mattress purchased in the Yeovil showrooms which give you complete peace of mind you are choosing the right option.

Sometimes the challenge isn't getting comfortable once you're in bed, but getting into bed, changing position or getting up again in the morning.

The height of your bed, the depth of your mattress and the type of base you choose can all make a noticeable difference. Adjustable beds can also provide greater flexibility, allowing you to raise your head or legs into a position that's more comfortable for sleeping, reading or relaxing.

Adjustable beds can be beneficial when dealing with other medical conditions such as acid reflux.

Everyone's needs are different, so if mobility is becoming a concern, it's often worth seeing the different options in person and discussing what might work best for you.

With so many mattress types, spring systems, fillings and firmness options available, it's perfectly normal to feel unsure where to begin.

Rather than comparing dozens of products at once, start by thinking about how you sleep. Consider your preferred sleeping position, whether you sleep warm or cool, whether you share the bed with a partner and what you like or dislike about your current mattress. Once you've answered those questions, narrowing down your options becomes much easier.

If you'd rather not work it out on your own, our team are always happy to talk you through the different options and help you decide where to start.
