Why are Vispring pocket springs so good?

In the beginning, inspiration struck.

James Marshall, a British Engineer living in Canada wanted to develop a superior system of comfort and support for his wife during a period of illness. Most mattresses in an age of old fashioned uncomfortable feather and horsehair padded systems with bouncy and unforgiving open coil link spring mattress spring units just didn't provide the comfort needed. James soon developed what we now know as the modern pocket spring, an individual coil capped at each end, encased in its very own fabric pouch and tied together with others to create the most responsive surface for the unforgiving contours of the human body to lay on. The idea took off, others fell in love with the feel and products and in 1901 John Nolan and Frederick James introduced Marshalls innovation to the UK, founding the Marshall Sanitary Mattress Company in London, by 1911 Vispring was born, adopting the Roman numeral VI, a nod to the six springs sewn into each pocket.

Inventing the Vanadium wire pocket spring

Not ever wanting to stop at their first achievements, Vispring continued to innovate and develop better products with the purpose of creating furniture to last a lifetime, a truly bespoke mattress their customers could enjoy for longer than most others. At the heart of every Vispring mattress lies a carefully crafted single, double or triple layer of Vanadium steel springs. Unlike most manufacturers, Vispring took the decision to produce every spring from this superior wire, strengthened for durability and longevity, meaning a core strength unparalleled by any other manufacturer. The result? A superior product, softer and more responsive in feel, structurally sound and built with precise wire gauges in over 74 different types.

What is Vanadium wire?

In essence, Vanadium wire is a thin flexible form of the element vanadium, which is known for its exceptional strength and corrosion resistance.

  1. Ductility: While described as "harder than most steels and metals", it's also ductile, meaning it can be drawn into a wire.
  2. Strength: It possesses high tensile strength and maintains its strength well at high temperatures.

Approximately 85% of the vanadium produced is used as ferrovanadium or as a steel additive. The considerable increase of strength in steel containing small amounts of vanadium was discovered in the early 20th century. Vanadium forms stable nitrides and carbides, resulting in a significant increase in it's strength. Vanadium steel was used for applications in axles, bicycle frames, crankshafts, gears, and other critical components.
